Hat Care

How to properly wash and store your hat?

The best way to wash your hat depends on the material, type, and degree of stain. Once you understand these factors, you can choose the most appropriate method - hand washing or spot cleaning. Before you start washing, check the type of fabric. If you are not sure what the hat is made of, you can use the comparison sample to identify.

Check color fastness

If your hat is dyed or colored, check the color fastness before washing. The method is simple: rub the fabric of the hat vigorously with white paper. If there is no color residue on the paper, it means it is safe to wash.

How to clean straw hats/sun hats

Straw hats are natural and light, but they are fragile and should not be treated with too much water. Dry cleaning or spot wiping is recommended for care.

✔ Cleaning of light stains:

  • Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to gently wipe the surface of the hat along the weave to remove dust or impurities.
  • For deeper cleaning, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and avoid rubbing hard.
  • Test in an inconspicuous place: Mix a small amount of detergent with water, and wipe gently with a damp cloth to ensure that the hat material will not be damaged.
  • After cleaning, dry naturally in the shade and avoid direct sunlight to prevent the hat from deforming or cracking.

✔ Cleaning of medium and heavy stains:

  • Dry cleaning adsorption method: Sprinkle corn starch or talcum powder on the stain, let it stand for 1-2 hours, and then brush it gently with a brush.
  • Partial wet wiping method: For stubborn stains such as sweat and oil stains, you can wipe it with a mild detergent solution and a damp cloth. After wiping, use a clean water cloth to finish to avoid residue.
  • Sweat band cleaning: Mix hydrogen peroxide and warm water in a 1:1 ratio, and gently brush the sweat band area inside the hat with a soft brush to remove stains and odors.
  • Finally, please place the hat in a ventilated place to dry in the shade. It can be dried upside down or placed on a mannequin head/hat rack to maintain its shape.

How to clean a cowboy hat

Denim hats are durable and crisp, suitable for spot cleaning or gentle hand washing.

Cleaning steps:

1. Pretreatment: Check for discoloration - wipe the surface of the hat with white paper, and make sure it will not fade before starting to wash.

2. Prepare cold water and neutral detergent, avoid using bleach or hot water.

3. Locally scrub key areas: such as sweat bands and forehead areas, use a soft brush to gently remove dirt.

4. Overall soaking (optional): If there is a lot of overall dirt, soak the cowboy hat in cold water for 30 minutes.

5. Rinse thoroughly, gently press to squeeze out excess water, and avoid wringing to prevent deformation.

6. Air dry naturally in a cool place, avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight.

Storage suggestions for straw hats/sun hats/cowboy hats

The correct storage method can significantly extend the service life of the hat and keep it straight and beautiful:

1. Choose a dry and ventilated storage environment to avoid moisture or exposure to the sun to prevent mildew and fading.

2. Use a hat box or dust bag for storage to avoid stacking and deformation.

3. Maintain the hat shape:

  • For curved brim straw hats, they can be placed upside down or fixed in shape using a hat rack;
  • It is recommended to stuff soft fillers into cowboy hats to keep the top of the hat upright.

✅ Tips summary:

  • Avoid soaking the entire straw hat and paper hat. Local wet wiping + drying in the shade is the key.
  • Cowboy hats can be hand washed with cold water. Soft brushing + natural drying is the safest.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and high temperature to make the hat last longer.
  • Keep it ventilated and dry during storage, and check it regularly to prevent mold or structural deformation.
